Commercial Case Study

The Eastern Cape factory Algoa Cement installed a 55kW solar PV system to reduce electricity costs and carbon emissions.

Result
This solar array now provides approximately 48% of Algoa’s electricity needs, allowing them to lock in pricing for the majority of their energy load and hedge against rising prices.

The Eastern Cape factory Algoa Cement installed a 55kW solar PV system to reduce electricity costs and carbon emissions. The grid-tied system features 55kW of solar panels and two SolarEdge inverters, estimated to generate 61MWh annually. This solar array now provides approximately 60% of Algoa’s electricity needs, allowing them to lock in pricing for the majority of their energy load and hedge against rising prices. By generating renewable solar electricity on-site, Algoa Cement has significantly decreased their carbon footprint, avoiding over 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions over 25 years. The system was financed so savings on electricity costs could pay off the capital expenditure over three years, allowing Algoa to realize immediate financial benefits from the solar installation. This case study shows how an industrial facility like Algoa Cement can utilize solar PV to achieve environmental sustainability, energy savings, and price stability. With innovative solutions like this, manufacturers can cost-effectively transition to clean, renewable energy while reducing operating expenses.

Client requirement
Removal of 104 x 150L geysers each containing a 3kw electrical element and replace it with a centralised hot water system comprising of 10 x 1000L German hot water storage tanks and 4 x 25kw ITS heat pumps as well as an efficient hot water ring main.

Result
Fantastic installation that has reduced their daily electricity consumption for hot water from 900kwh to 200kwh per day. The return on investment for this client was 1.5 years.

The main goal of the project was to reduce Oro Agri’s electricity demand and costs during daytime operation.

The 30kW solar array provides approximately 30% of Oro Agri’s electricity consumption during daytime operation. Over the system’s estimated 25 year life, over 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be avoided.
